EMDR Therapy for Trauma
You have probably tried to manage this on your own for longer than you should have had to. EMDR therapy with a certified trauma specialist offers a structured, evidence-based approach to processing trauma at its root.

You Probably Recognise at Least One of These
Feeling tense without knowing why
A smell or tone of voice that instantly shifts your mood
Nightmares or flashbacks of an uncomfortable event
Lying awake at 3am unable to turn your thoughts off
Feeling disconnected from your own life
Knowing you are safe while your body refuses to believe it
These are not personal failings. They are what happens when the brain holds onto an experience it never got to finish processing. EMDR is designed to change that.
What is EMDR and Why Does It Work?
EMDR, Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing, is recognised by the World Health Organization and the American Psychological Association as an evidence-based treatment for trauma and PTSD.
Unlike talk therapy, EMDR works directly with how traumatic memories are stored in the brain. Using bilateral stimulation, typically guided eye movements, EMDR helps the brain reprocess distressing experiences so they no longer trigger the same overwhelming response. The memory does not disappear. But it loses its charge.
Many clients notice meaningful shifts within the first few sessions, often more progress than they expected after years of trying other approaches.
EMDR is not appropriate for everyone. Suitability is assessed during your free consultation with Amy.
Meet Amy!
Mental Health | Trauma | Therapist
Amy is a Counselling Therapist and Canadian Certified Counsellor with more than 13 years of experience working specifically with trauma.
She is certified in EMDR and has supported hundreds of adults across Alberta including first responders, survivors of abuse and assault, people navigating grief and loss, and those carrying the weight of childhood, cultural, and intergenerational trauma.
Amy works with people who have tried therapy before and felt stuck. Her approach is never rushed. Trauma work requires safety before anything else, and Amy builds that carefully before any processing begins. You will never be pushed faster than you are ready to go.
Amy offers sessions in English, Punjabi, and Hindi.
Sessions are covered by most Alberta extended health benefit plans under Counselling Therapist and Canadian Certified Counsellor designations.

Online EMDR Therapy Across Alberta
All sessions with Amy are 50 minutes and delivered securely online, available to adults across Calgary, Edmonton, Red Deer, Lethbridge, Medicine Hat, Fort McMurray, Grande Prairie, and communities province-wide. Online EMDR requires a stable internet connection and a private space. Your therapist will confirm technical requirements before your first session.
How it Works
The first session is not about diving into the hardest things. It is about Amy getting to know you, understanding your history and goals, and building the foundation of safety that trauma work requires.
If at any point something feels like too much, you say so and Amy slows down. You are in control of what gets explored and when. The work moves at your pace, not a predetermined schedule. Many clients find that knowing this makes it possible to begin.
Additional EMDR sessions follow a structured, phased process. The first sessions focus on understanding your history, identifying specific memories or experiences to target, and building tools that help you stay grounded during processing.
When processing begins, you briefly focus on a memory while following guided bilateral stimulation, typically eye movements. You are not required to describe every detail or relive the experience in full. Your therapist guides the pace and checks in frequently to ensure you feel stable.
The goal is not to overwhelm you. It is to help your brain reprocess the memory so it no longer triggers the same emotional or physical response.
You remain in control throughout the session. If something feels like too much, you say so and the pace slows immediately. Trauma therapy is collaborative and moves at a speed that feels manageable for you.
What You Can Expect From EMDR Treatment
Many clients report reduced emotional reactivity, fewer intrusive memories and flashbacks, improved sleep, a greater sense of safety in daily life, and the ability to engage with people and situations that previously felt overwhelming. Results vary by individual and are discussed honestly during your consultation.
If You Have Tried Therapy Before and Felt Stuck
Many clients who seek EMDR have previously tried traditional talk therapy and understood their patterns without feeling lasting relief. EMDR works differently. Your consultation is an opportunity to discuss what you have tried and whether this approach may offer something more targeted.
The Practical Things
Do I need a referral? No. Book directly with Amy today.
Is this covered by insurance? Most Alberta extended health plans cover sessions with a Counselling Therapist and Canadian Certified Counsellor. Amy provides receipts after every session for reimbursement.
What if therapy has not helped me before? EMDR works differently from talk therapy and often reaches what conversation alone cannot. The free consultation is the right place to discuss your history and whether this approach is a good fit.
Can I have sessions in Punjabi or Hindi? Yes. Amy offers sessions in English, Punjabi, and Hindi.
What if it feels like too much during a session? You say so and Amy stops. You are never required to push through something that feels unsafe.
Therapy is not a substitute for emergency services. If you are in crisis please contact 911 or your local emergency services immediately.
